The NSW Minerals Council, in conjunction with member companies, has prepared this Fact Sheet to outline the diversity of industry in the Hunter Valley, and the role of the minerals industry. Lead is a heavy metal that can have serious health consequences. This is a concern for all communities, whether city or regional. To better understand the issue, the NSW Minerals Council and some coal mining operators in the Hunter Valley sought the expertise of specialist researchers to investigate the relationship between coal mining and lead levels in the Hunter. The studies found that sampled lead levels are well below national standards and there is no demonstrated lead-related health risk from coal mining in the Hunter Valley.
