Mining is a temporary land use. After the minerals have been extracted, mining companies rehabilitate the land to a condition agreed with the local community and the NSW Government. This agreement is reached in the planning stage, prior to the opening of the mine, and may include rehabilitating the land as native habitat or for agricultural and residential uses. Comprehensive mine planning is required by law, but also forms part of a company’s ‘social licence to operate’ with local communities.
