NSW is abundantly rich in a wide variety of mineral resources. Coal is the predominant mineral resource in NSW, accounting for 81% of the total value of mineral production. Metallic minerals mined in NSW include gold, copper, silver, lead, zinc and other rarer minerals.
NSW also has large reserves of industrial minerals including mineral sands, clays, diatomite, dimension stone, dolomite, feldspar, garnet, gypsum, limestone, magnesite, magnetite, serpentinite, silica and zeolites. These industrial minerals are used to make products like bricks, cement, glass, ceramics, pavers, pipes, paints and plastics.
Precious gems mined in NSW include opals, sapphires, rubies and diamonds.
