NSW produces significant quantities of industrial minerals such as clays, diatomite, dimension stones (granite, sandstone, marble and slate), dolomite, feldspar, garnet, gypsum, limestone, magnesite, magnetite, mineral sands, serpentinite, silica and zeolites. Small quantities of gemstones such as ruby, sapphire, opal and diamond are also mined. These industrial minerals are mined at numerous locations across the State.
Mining in the far west of NSW includes such industrial minerals as feldspar, garnet, gypsum and opal. Large deposits of mineral sands are also mined in the far west of the State, near Pooncarie, Balranald and Euston.
Magnesite is mined in Thuddungra, in the central west region of NSW. Also in the central west, near Marulan, is the largest limestone quarry in Australia, with the Port Kembla Steelworks consuming about one third of total output. Limestone is also mined near Kandos, Bathurst, Tamworth, Capertee and Yass.
Dolomite is mined near Mudgee in the central part of NSW. Magnetite is also mined in central NSW, near Gulgong.
