Metallic Minerals

Metalliferous mining, or mining for metallic mineral reserves, is largely centred in the mid western region of NSW and in the far west near historic Broken Hill. Lead, zinc and silver have been mined continuously around Broken Hill since 1883 when Broken Hill Proprietary Limited formed (now BHP Billiton).

Gold and copper are mined predominantly in the central west of the State.  The Orange region continues to be one of the largest gold and copper-producing areas in Australia. Copper and gold are also mined near Parkes and further west at Cobar, which has been known for its copper reserves since the 1850s and also boasts significant deposits of lead, zinc and silver.
