Mining has been a feature of the Australian environment for more than 40,000 years and was first carried out across the continent by Aboriginal Australians. Minerals began to be produced in large quantities from the early days of European settlement and today mining remains one of Australia’s great primary industries. The State of NSW has an abundance of high quality resources that have been mined over the course of the past 200 years. Many locations have historical linkages with mining as they were initially established as mining towns.
Coal is the major mineral resource mined in NSW. In 2009-10, there were 63 operational coal mines and 30 coal mine development projects underway. The major coalfields are based in the Sydney-Gunnedah Basin.
NSW also produces an extensive range of metallic and industrial minerals.
