Mines spend millions of dollars each year on energy, and it makes good business sense to identify where reductions in energy use can be made. Electricity is used to power machinery, processing equipment, fans, pumps, office equipment and lighting. Petroleum fuels such as diesel are used for transport, haulage and machinery. Natural gas can be used for on-site electricity generation and machinery operation.
Energy efficiency relates to minimising the amount of energy required to perform a particular task or service. By becoming more energy efficient mines can maintain the same level of production using less energy, thereby saving money on energy costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Energy audits help companies identify activities with high energy requirements and where changes could be made to reduce these requirements. Energy efficiency can be improved by upgrading older equipment and ensuring that equipment is the right specification for its purpose. Some equipment can be switched off when not in use for an extended period. Diesel fuel for haulage can be reduced through a reduction of haulage distances through improved mine planning and equipment relocation, and driver training can also deliver substantial efficiency gains through improved driving techniques.
