Our mining workforce and mining communities are our top priorities – after all, they’re our neighbours. The 45,000 men and women who are directly employed in NSW mines live in nearby regional towns. We send our children to the local schools, play in sports teams and meet friends at the local pub.
Many of our communities have generations of families who have been involved in mining. There are fathers and grandfathers who worked on mine sites and now their sons and daughters work in the industry or in related businesses.
The NSW mining industry strives to improve the quality of life and the socio-economic standards of the communities in which it operates and lives. Mining companies understand that to operate successfully in close proximity to towns and cities, they need what is called a ‘social licence to operate’. This means working with local communities to understand and meet their expectations of the industry, as well as giving back to the community.

NSW Mining's stall at Skills on Show
NSW Mining sponsored a stall at Skills on Show to foster enthusiasm for, and interest in, the minerals industry as a potential career of choice. NSW Mining’s sponsorship was actively supported by local mining operators Centennial Coal and Rio Tinto Coal and Allied. The stall featured an interactive exhibition showcasing a range of technologies and cutting edge practices that are used throughout the minerals industry in NSW.
The aim of NSW Mining’s sponsorship was to encourage young people from the Hunter region to consider a career in the minerals industry and the enthusiasm that the attendees showed for the industry was a rewarding experience for all involved.
