Coal Specific Statistics

  • 89% of NSW’s total energy needs are met from domestically mined coal   

  • More than 40% of total coal reserves in NSW are estimated to lie in the Gunnedah Basin in the north west of the State

  • The Hunter Valley Coal Chain is the world’s largest coal export operation
  • Approximately 85% of Hunter export coal goes to Japan, Korea and Taiwan 

  • Employment in NSW coal mines is 27,000

  • Coal equates to 81% of the total value of mineral production in NSW

  • Coal is NSW's number one merchandise export in value terms, worth $14.1 billion in 2010-11.
