Technology and Innovation

The minerals industry is a progressive industry.  Australia is internationally recognised for its advanced mining practices and is a leader in the development of mining technology, ranging from sophisticated satellite exploration technology to specialised equipment that improves productivity and safety.

Mining technologies and innovations also have flow-down effects on other primary industries, further contributing to the economy and society.

We not only export our mineral resources, but also our mining know-how and expertise.  Exports of mining equipment, technology and services are valued at over $5 billion a year.

Software development is one area in which Australia excels on a global level.  60% of the world’s mining computer software is developed here in Australia. (Source: DFAT)

The industry employs many environmental scientists in its efforts to continually improve ways to extract minerals while meeting the highest environmental standards.

Research and development (R&D) are crucial factors in the provision of mining services, particularly in regards to the advancement of new software, as well as technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

The good ideas, innovations and technologies don’t just come from the scientists and technical experts.  The industry’s mine workers are continually developing new methods, techniques, innovations and inventions to improve their working conditions, to ensure the industry’s minimal impact on the environment and to strengthen their relationships and engagement with the communities within which they work and live.

To encourage and celebrate these achievements, each year the NSW minerals industry hosts two significant Awards that recognise leading practice and innovation in safety and health, environmental management and community engagement.  For further information about these awards, please go to the Excellence and Innovation Awards section of this website.

There are a large number of government and private sector organisations developing and promoting Australian mining equipment, technology and services.
