Company: Centennial Coal – Newstan Colliery
Summary: Maintenance or relocation on the longwall machine requires the isolation, via a simple ball valve, of the incoming hydraulic supply. An incident occurred at Newstan Colliery due to the failure of seals on the ball valve which then caused unintentional re-pressurisation of the hydraulic supply. An integrated valve system was engineered which limits exposure to high pressure fluid system components in the event of failure. This valve system allows for: the isolation and restoration of pressure by a sequenced key system; the pressure to be re-applied to the system at a controlled rate; and for the dissipation of pressure at the isolation points, which prevent damage to valve components.
