Building effective long-term relationships with Indigenous communities is core business for the NSW minerals industry. The Indigenous community provides valuable information about Aboriginal cultural heritage values in mining regions. The Indigenous community also has a right to share in the economic benefits that mining brings to local communities.
The NSW Government has guidelines in place that outline how proponents should consult with Indigenous communities when a mine will disturb Aboriginal objects or places. Consultation with Indigenous communities can help identify Aboriginal artefacts and their significance, as well as appropriate ways to manage any impacts on cultural heritage.
Mines often implement socio-economic programs to improve the skills and employment prospects of Indigenous communities. To raise awareness of Indigenous cultural heritage, many mining operations undertake cross-cultural training for their employees and contractors as part of their induction or ongoing development.
The Commonwealth Government’s Working in Partnership program aims to support and encourage positive relations between Indigenous communities and the mining industry, and promote long term, effective partnerships which benefit all stakeholders.
