Infrastructure

Infrastructure policy covers a broad range of issues impacting the mining industry. These include:

  • Transport – the road, rail systems and ports which form export supply chains and support mining operations

  • Water – markets for the trading of water rights and hard infrastructure such as pipelines for the transportation of water

  • Energy – the NSW mining industry is both a provider of fuel for energy production and an energy user, for tasks such as minerals processing

  • Telecommunications – effective networks are essential for safety as well as efficient business practices.

Each of these infrastructure sectors is critical to the efficiency and sustainability of mining operations across the State.

The NSW Minerals Council represents its members in discussions with Government on infrastructure policies and in public debate on these issues.

Another important component is social infrastructure. This refers to the institutions and services which are needed to support the vibrant communities which form around, or expand as a result of, mining developments. For example, schools, hospitals and affordable housing are all areas of social infrastructure which are critical to sustain mining communities.
