Rail systems form a very important part of supply chains for the NSW mining industry. For example, the Hunter Valley coal network, operated by the Australian Rail Track Corporation, sees around 27 coal trains making 15,000 loaded trips per year of up to 350kms. The vast majority of this coal, in excess of 90 million tonnes per year, ends up at the Port of Newcastle for export to international customers. Rail links from the Western Coalfield and gold mining operations in the Central West region of the State carry exports to Port Kembla.
