The Penrith Lakes Environmental Centre is an innovative education facility located at an operating quarry site on the outskirts of Sydney.
The Penrith Lakes Scheme will eventually turn a 200 hectare mining operation into a series of lakes and surrounding parklands with some urban development.
The education centre represents a unique cooperative venture between quarrying companies, the NSW Minerals Council and education providers. This partnership was formed to take advantage of the great curriculum potential of the scheme and associated environmental management.
The centre mainly caters for students from primary and secondary schools and has developed a wide range of teaching programs to support school curriculums. These include water management, rehabilitation of mined sites, ecosystems, heritage, conservation, geology, Aboriginal studies and sustainable development.
The centre provides a minibus for transport around the scheme and for pick-up from Penrith train station.
Schools can book a site visit and program by phoning the teacher-in-charge on 02 4730 3630.
