General Information about EnviroSmart Grants Program
Established by the NSW Minerals Council to encourage, promote and recognise environmental excellence by schools that develop & implement a School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP), using the EnviroSmart kit, which is sustainable and practical for that school’s environment.
The Minerals Council of Australia, with collaboration from NSW Minerals Council, has produced an environmental education kit for use in upper primary & junior secondary schools. This kit is closely linked to the NSW Science & H.S.I.E. curricula and the environmental education policy for NSW government schools, which stipulates that schools must develop a SEMP (School Environmental Management Plan) as part of their annual reporting procedures.
By using the kit, schools can develop a SEMP, which is based on how mine sites around Australia develop their management plans.
2008 EnviroSmart Grants Scheme
We will be limiting applications to those schools nominated by each sponsor within their operating region including the Hunter Valley, Illawarra and Central West regions.
Nominated schools within these areas are asked to make a grant application, for up to $500 to enable them to carry out some environmental project at their school which was identified in their SEMP with evidence that they had used some strategy from the EnviroSmart kit/program to complete their SEMP.
To assist schools with ideas for suitable projects here is a list of the successful grant applications for 2006.
Allocation of Awards
Schools in these three mining precincts would be actively encouraged to use the EnviroSmart Program to develop their SEMP and to submit a summary of their plan together with an application for a grant to support an environmental project at their school.
An equitable distribution of grants per region would be distributed, subject to applications received from schools within these areas. Schools who were awarded a grant in 2007 are encouraged to apply again and build on their environmental projects!
In 2007 56 schools were successful in their grant applications.
