Make a coal seam in a glass box (e.g. an old fish tank) by carefully layering separate beds of sand, clay, old leaves, moss and sawdust, followed by more sand and clay.
Cover this with water and leave to settle over a number of weeks. Note any changes, in particular any oily film on the surface of the water. Notice the rate of change and the type of change.
Record your observations in labelled and dated diagrams.
