EnviroSmart Online Resource
EnviroSmart is an interactive education resource that encourages students to examine the environmental management practices within their school, their local community and the Australian minerals industry.
The EnviroSmart resource focuses on sustainability with a number of student activities and teacher resources provided to move through the key themes of air, water, land, energy and waste.
Developed by the Minerals Council of Australia and based on the Australian curriculum, the EnviroSmart resource may be used across a number of school years.
In using EnviroSmart, teachers and students are able to develop, implement and report on a sustainable School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP).
By becoming an EnviroSmart school and developing a SEMP, students will:
- develop a greater understanding of the impact of people on the environment
- gain a greater appreciation of the principles of sustainable development
- use their understanding of environmental management practices in the Australian minerals industry to apply environmental management strategies within their own school environment
- be able to identify the elements of the school environment that they can manage more effectively
- make a commitment to environmental management practices at both the individual and community level.
Access to EnviroSmart is available through Oresome Resources.
EnviroSmart Grants
EnviroSmart is closely linked to the NSW Department of Education and Training’s environmental education policy which stipulates that schools must develop a SEMP (School Environmental Management Plan) as part of their annual reporting procedures.
The EnviroSmart Grants Program was established by the NSW Minerals Council, with direct support from member companies, to encourage, promote and recognise environmental excellence by schools in regional NSW.
The EnviroSmart Grants serve the purpose of inspiring environmental excellence as well as assisting in educating Australia’s youth about the importance of responsible environmental management and practice.
How to Apply for EnviroSmart Grants
Applications are limited to those schools nominated by each sponsoring company within their operating region including the Central West, Hunter Valley, Illawarra and Tahmoor regions.
Nominated schools within these areas are invited to make an application for a grant of up to $1,000 to enable them to carry out an environmental project at their school. Applications should contain evidence that the proposed project was identified using the EnviroSmart themes (air, water, energy, waste and land) to develop their SEMP.
Potential environmental projects can include native gardens, waste management, water conservation, and erosion control.
Allocation of Awards
Nominated schools are encouraged to use the EnviroSmart Resource [hyperlink] to develop their SEMP and to submit a summary of their SEMP together with an application for a grant to support an environmental project at their school.
The Grants Program aims for an equitable distribution of grants per region, subject to applications received from schools within these areas. Schools are encouraged to apply in subsequent years to build on their environmental projects!
Hundreds of schools across regional NSW have been supported since the program began in 2004.
