Post-mining revegetation options use native species wherever possible. The use of native trees and grasses provides benefits of native biodiversity enhancement as well as more successful rehabilitation through general environmental resilience of native species and improved long term pasture productivity in the case of grazing.
Native grass utilisation studies and field trials were conducted in the Hunter Valley in recent years, which in turn has encouraged seed harvesting and testing regimes as well as seeding and germination technologies.
To obtain more detailed studies on the use of native species in rehabilitation of coal mines, see the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP).
