Minerals are so embedded in everyday life they’re easy to take for granted. The computer screen you’re looking at, the mouse in your hand, the energy to power them – all come from minerals. In just a few centuries, mineral resources and clever ways of accessing them have made life safer, cleaner and better.
NSW has the good fortune to be rich in minerals, the mining of which brings benefits to everyone in the state. Taxes and royalties paid by mining companies help pay for schools and other public services. Superannuation schemes benefit from company profits. Homes and business enjoy affordable, reliable energy. The economy flourishes thanks to multi-billion dollar mineral exports.
With this comes a challenge: how to sustain mining’s benefits for everyone in NSW while protecting the people who work in our mines, the communities that support them and the natural environment in which we all live and work.
The NSW Minerals Council recognises this challenge. Representing more than 70 mining businesses in NSW, we work with industry, government and the community to achieve safe and healthy working conditions, dynamic economic growth, responsible environmental outcomes and vital regional communities in NSW.
