Hunter Region
Economic powerhouse

The half a million people who make their home in the Hunter Region comprise just nine per cent of the NSW population but their skills and hard work contribute 32 per cent to state exports.

Coal is the biggest export earner in the Hunter, accounting for approximately 91 per cent of the region’s total exports. More than 70 million tonnes are exported annually through Newcastle, the world’s largest coal-exporting port. The Hunter also includes five power stations fed by coal from the nearby mines. This infrastructure continues to attract power intensive industries to the region, which produces 40 per cent of Australia’s aluminum.
