Coal mining has been a vital part of the economy of the Upper Hunter since the late 1800's. Underground mining was the norm but as technology improved, more open cut mines were established.
The coal is either exported or transported locally to Macquarie Generation’s Bayswater and Liddell power stations which have the capacity to produce up to 40 per cent of NSW electricity demand. Wine production and tourism are also a vital industries in the Upper Hunter - 31 million litres of wine are produced annually and annual tourists number 1.7 million.
