The Murray and Riverina Regions in south-western NSW are dominated by the major geological unit known as the Murray Basin. Formed millions of years ago as the inland ocean receded south, the Basin contains vast reserves of mineral sands.
The sands are comparable in grain size to those found on the continental east coast. Heavy mineral sand resources such as ilmenite, rutile and zircon could exceed 100 million tonnes.
Most sites are still under exploration or in development, including Euston, Gallipoli , Ginko Regional, Murray Basin, Nanya, Northern Murray Basin and Twelve Mile. When operational they will complement the traditional regional industries of wool, rice, maize, canola, citrus, wine and grapes.
