This traditionally agricultural region of NSW contains the major geological units known as the Gunnedah Basin which includes the Gunnedah Coal Field, and the New England Fold Belt which is scattered with deposits of gold, copper, gemstones and industrial minerals.
The Gunnedah Coal Field adjoins the Hunter Region and is today an exploration hot spot. In September 2005 the NSW Department of Primary Industries invited mining companies to apply for exploration rights over Caroona, 50 km south east of Gunnedah and 30 km northwest of Quirindi, which contains more than 500 million tonnes of potentially mineable, export quality underground coal.
